To the authorities at Jefferson Med

You are busy, so I will make this brief.

I am a 2006 graduate of Jefferson Medical College, and went on to complete my plastic surgery residency at UC Davis in Sacramento, Calif. I spent a fair amount of time during my Jefferson years participating in medical missions: the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ghana, and Bangladesh. In residency, I continued this, going to Papua New Guinea, China, Burundi, Ethiopia, and even spending a whole year in Kenya.

I now live and work full-time in the francophone country of Gabon.

In each of these countries, I am required to get a medical license (as well I should). In each country, my Jeffersonian diploma has been a constant headache. It is unwieldy, oversized, and (importantly), not in English (or, for that matter, French). I cannot tell you how many times I have been stopped, questioned, and given problems for my Jeffersonian diploma. Many of these countries, (as well as, notably, the state of California) require that the original diploma be presented. The little piece of paper with a generic English translation simply does not suffice for many overseas bureaucracies. What a pain it is to lug a 19x24 inch framed diploma from the US to Central Africa!

I am just one doctor trying to do some good in hard places. However, my diploma is a liability, and it makes it very hard to do these sorts of mission work. As I am sure Jefferson would otherwise applaud these sorts of endeavors, I would ask the university to seriously consider helping me and others like me. All I request is that TJU/JMC(SKMC) issue (or offer the option of) a legitimate, stamped & sealed, medical diploma in English on a standard piece of paper. I am happy to pay for the diploma reissue.

Simply put, a large Latin diploma looks nice in an air-conditioned Philadelphia office, but it only makes my job in the jungles of Africa more difficult. Please help me.

Thank you.
